What should I consider before ordering?
There are two basic categories of HO Slot Cars: Modern Magnet Cars and Vintage T-Jet Style Cars.
Modern 'magnet' cars have 'magnet' downforce and will run very fast right out of the packaging.
Vintage Style NOS (New-Old-Stock) Aurora T-Jet 500 and AFX cars (as well as the new reproduction Johnny Lightning Tuff Ones, Johnny Lightning X-Traction & Model Motoring ThunderPlus) will require regular maintenance including tuning, cleaning, and oiling. In fact, NOS and new reproduction Vintage Style T-Jet chassis may require ‘tuning’ before their first lap around the track. These cars are not nearly as fast as new modern 'magnet' cars and require a very different driving skill. The cars do not have 'magnet' downforce and will fishtail. Some of the NOS chassis are 40+ years old and the tires will need to be replaced. Additionally, they may not go fast enough to trigger lap counters.
HO slot car scale (1/87–1/64) varies from manufacturer-to-manufacturer and car-to-car (even within a particular manufacturer line-up). Car detailing, style, and performance are matters of opinion. We have customers who prefer one line over the other and vice versa.
HO slot car racing and collecting is an adult hobby and does not offer the same experience as new high tech toys and video games. There are adult racing clubs all over the country dedicated to racing and collecting both Vintage Style and Modern Magnet Style HO slot cars. HO slot car racing is a hobby requiring mechanical skills and dexterity for driving and track & car maintenance. This hobby will require almost as much time in maintenance as in actual racing. For those who know and love this hobby, this is part of the FUN of HO-SLOT-CARS.
